Tech Air Solutions, a UK-based Air Filtration Technology startup, are pleased to share they have been selected to be part of this year’s (2024) Bupa eco-Disruptive programme, where they receive seed funding and support from six internal staff from across Bupa’s organisation, called a ‘Bupa Squad’, to help them develop their product and market proposition further.

Only a small number of start-ups are selected each year across some of Bupa’s key regions, which include UK, Spain, Poland, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Australia. From the start of September, the Tech Air Solutions and Bupa squad will work closely to develop their technology and messaging and by late November, will then be pitched against other selected eco-Disruptive startups from around the world, to select the overall global winner.

As described by Bupa, the international healthcare provider, eco-Disruptive 2024: Healthy Societies is “their global talent and innovation programme. The eco-Disruptive programme connects Bupa’s people with start-ups working to find solutions to help those in society who face barriers to accessing quality healthcare. The programme provides entrepreneurs a platform to showcase their solutions, with our finalists receiving a mix of financial support, marketing expertise and networking opportunities.”

The winning startup will then be awarded £250,000 in prize money and receive further support to get the product to market quicker and start making a difference in pushing forward Bupa’s mission of creating healthier societies for all.

This additional funding and recognition by a leading and innovative company such as Bupa, has provided Tech Air Solutions with an exciting opportunity to work in collaboration with some highly talented people in the squad, as well as test and trial their AirSMART technology in new locations across the Bupa network.

Tech Air Solution’s innovative AirSMART technology was devised in 2020 during the pandemic and utilises the filtration expertise of Tech Air Solution’s parent company, Microtech Filters, combined with sophisticated connected and smart technology to monitor localised external air pollution levels and then clean the air when needed. The initial application of this technology has been in various, different sized ‘bollards’, that could be easily installed in locations such as outside hospitals, care homes, railway stations, schools and drive thrus. The result is a highly efficient system that can reduce air pollution by up to 65% in localised areas, improving the health of both staff and members of the public in high pollution areas.

Paddy Moore, Tech Air Solutions Managing Director said, “We are delighted to have been selected as part of this year’s Bupa eco-Disruptive innovation programme. With the seed funding provided, we will be able to push forward development of integrated solar technology to power the AirSMART sensors and to further optimise the application of this technology and its environmental credentials by investigating new materials and form factors.”

Being selected to be part of Bupa’s eco-Disruptive programme, comes off the back of being shortlisted for the 2024 Earthshot Prize, whereby Tech Air Solutions received two official nominations from hundreds of applications. In 2022, the AirSMART technology was also recognised at the RISE (Research, Innovation, Sustainability and Enterprise) awards, which was in association with Leeds Beckett University and the International Sustainable Ecological Engineering Design for Society (SEEDS) Conference.

Tech Air Solutions are passionate about creating localised clean air zones in areas where external pollution is harmful, particular for vulnerable members of society. By raising awareness through their Air monitoring capabilities and then reducing harmful pollutants in the air through their AirSMART technology, Tech Air Solutions can be an integral part in reducing respiratory illnesses, as well as preventing some of the World Health Organisation’s estimated 6.7 million people, who die prematurely across the world each year, due to air pollution.
