The New AirSMART™ ‘Bollard’
Clean. Green. Smart. Efficient. Effective.
What is it?
Our cylindrical AirSMART™ oversized ‘Bollard’ measures 400mm in diameter and offers an unobtrusive, cost-effective and efficient way to significantly reduce air pollution and particulate matter to increase localised external air quality for customers and colleagues and the local community
“Air pollution is the single biggest environmental threat to human health” and that “the burden of disease resulting from air pollution also imposes a significant economic burden”
– World Health Organisation (2021) –
What does it do?
Our AirSMART™ Technology monitors the air around it and turns on and off automatically when air pollution levels reach high levels. Once started our Bollards get to work ‘cleaning’ the air and removing the most dangerous substances that impact air quality, which include:

Particulate Matter 2.5
The air that we breathe contains microscopic particles that we cannot see but are still able to be absorbed into our body via the lungs. Areas with high traffic have much higher levels of PM2.5 and over exposure can lead to a range of health conditions including asthma, heart disease & lung cancer

Nitrogen Dioxide
This is one of the most dangerous gases that result from vehicle fumes with 80% coming from transport at the roadside. The affects of over exposure to Nitrogen Dioxide are reductions in lung function, increases in respiratory diseases, particularly amongst children and cardiovascular risks

Ozone
This is a gas that is composed of three atoms of oxygen and is made by a chemical reaction between sunlight and gases from vehicles. Inhaling Ozone can irritate airways of everyone, including those in full health. In high concentrations, Ozone can reduce lung capacity and trigger asthma symptoms

Independently tested and validated
To prove the effectiveness of the AirSMART™ Technology, we worked with external partners and the University of Derby.
In this first image, we worked with Dexdyne to test the air monitoring solution, which would switch the filtration system on and off depending on the level of particulate matter and harmful gasses in the air. Here, the graph shows the impact of our Bollard, which turned on (blue line) when it detected air pollution (red line), then cleaned the air and turned back off when the level of air pollution dropped to a safe level.
The second image was done in conjunction with the university of Derby. Their expert team used Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to measure how particulates move through the Bollard, their velocity and how they are distributed when they exit the Bollard, within an area of two cubic metres. This research indicates we can locate the Bollards approximately four metres apart to achieve optimal performance and improved air quality.

Where can this technology be used?
Our AirSMART™ Bollard works best in areas where there are high concentrations of both people and vehicles. Whilst there are many places our bollard could have an impact, we believe the below are where they can make a real difference

Outside Schools
Often schools are located on or near busy roads, which in the morning drop-off or afternoon collection, means a very high concentration of vehicles and people. Children are especially susceptible to air pollution, which is why this is a key area where our bollards would make a big impact on air quality for all

Healthcare Settings
With air pollution increasing the risk of dying prematurely and having proven links to illnesses including Asthma, Strokes, Cognitive issues and Heart disease, increasing air quality in locations that have the most vulnerable people is paramount, which is why hospitals and care homes would benefit from the application of AirSMART technology

Drive thrus
A recent BBC documentary found air pollution was 25% higher at drive thru locations than ‘normal’ levels. This is because they often have cars queuing 24 hours a day around the restaurants, bombarding customers and employees with a high level of exposure to air pollution that can seriously harm their health
The economic cost of air pollution for your business
Recent research has shown that exposure to even low concentrations of air pollution can have detrimental impacts to both physical and cognitive performance, which is important from not only a duty of care perspective for your employees, but also it has economic implications too

A multi-industry study found air pollution reduces the productivity of employees
Lichter et al. (2017), Adhvaryu et al. (2019), Kahn & Li (2020)

Air pollution makes it harder to think in both academic and non-academic settings
Ebenstein et al. (2016)

Air pollution decreases physical health, resulting in increased employee absence
Aragón et al. (2017) and Holub et al. (2021)

Exposure to high air pollution reduces cognitive ability
Zhang et al. (2018)
Working with us
We have developed a simple 4-Stage approach to getting our AirSMART™ Technology installed at your business. We first of all do an initial site test (details on our test rig are below), which enables us to create a project plan and defines the number of Bollards needed. Once agreed with you, our expert team install the Bollards with minimal disruption to your business and then it’s all go with monitoring the difference in air quality. We have a range of finance and maintenance options too (see FAQs below), to make adopting this new technology as easy as possible

Get started today
To see the reduction in air pollution our AirSMART™ Bollard could make at your business, we do an initial site test using our oversized test rig (see photo), which will monitor air pollution over a specified time period and then show the difference when the bollard is switched on vs when it is switched off. To book your site test click below.
